My Story
ENvironmentalist turned INvironmentalist
It was a cold, bleak day in February as I listened to the doctor inform me I was presenting signs and symptoms of urologic cancer and needed furthering testing.
CANCER? Wow! How. Did. I. Get. Here?
Twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, I was consumed with defending, protecting, and nurturing our finite natural resources and navigating the stressful political arena where bills are passed or defeated around the air we breathe, water we drink, and soil in which we grow our food. Some called me an environmentalist.
Due to this high stress, fast-paced career in environmental advocacy, I, my SELF, became physically polluted, degraded, and depleted.
Heretofore, my body had been communicating its distress through chronic pain, migraine headaches, and insomnia, but I didn’t listen, until I found myself being tested for cancer.
After enduring additional tests and waiting the excruciating two weeks for the diagnosis, I was, finally, in front of the doctor awaiting the words from his mouth. He looked me straight in the eyes and said, “You’re lucky. You don’t have cancer, yet.” “Yet?” I asked. He informed me I needed to make dramatic lifestyle changes around stress levels, exercise, eating habits (I'd gained 50 pounds), spirituality, and personal support. In other words, I needed to become an INvironmentalist, instead of an ENvironmentalist.
Four months later, I walked away from a 20-year career and the security of a steady paycheck, health insurance, and retirement plan to seek physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual healing.
Body-mind Therapy (The Phoenix Rising Method) and Therapeutic Yoga were the tools that brought healing to my body, mind, and spirit – my whole Self. The Phoenix Rising Method of accessing sensory, emotional, spiritual, and historical personal data held in my physical body brought a deeper level of healing around my unique set of circumstances – why I was a workaholic and neglected self-care.
Through this powerful, body-focused, self-healing modality, I felt empowered to lose weight, eat healthfully, connect more fully with family and friends, and better manage stress through forming a different life view. My life continues to become richer and fuller as I nurture connecting with and listening to my own INvironmental wisdom.
Is it time you become an INvironmentalist?
